For designers. Your clients keep asking for a website. Start saying yes.

Your clients keep asking for a website. Start saying yes.

You make the identity. I build the website around it, quietly, under your name. You price it however you like and keep the difference. Send me one brand and I will show you what I mean, free.

The money walking past you.

Every brand you finish needs a website. Right now one of three things happens. The client finds someone cheap, and the site makes your work look worse than it is. They find someone good, and pay them more than they paid you. Or they never get round to it, and the identity you made lives in a PDF.

Every time, the money for the website walks straight past you. And the client already trusts you. They already asked you. You just never had anyone to say yes with. Now you do.

What you actually have to do.

Send one message. An email, or a DM on Instagram, whichever you are already in. That is the whole job on your side. No code to learn, no developer to manage, no calls with me unless you want them. You keep talking to your client the way you already do, and the website appears behind you.

Your client never hears my name unless you would like them to. Every email, every call and every invoice comes from you. Once the money has landed, you have demo concepts to show them within 24 to 48 hours.

  1. 1

A client says they need a website.

    You say, we do that.

  2. 2

You send me the brief and the design.

I send you one price, in writing, within a day.

  3. 3

They pay you. You pay me. I start.

Demo concepts for the client within 24 to 48 hours of the money landing. Then the build. The rest is yours.

How the money works.

You add a website to a job you were already doing, and more than double what you take home from it. Same client. Same amount of your time. Every price here is what I charge you. What you charge is none of my business.

Nothing changes hands until your client has paid you. And if you would rather not run the project at all, introduce me and take fifteen per cent of whatever I bill. Your choice, every time.

The client paid £3,700. I got £1,000 for the build. You did not work an hour longer. It should feel like a raise you gave yourself.

I looked up what the UK market actually charges, so you do not have to take my word for it. The numbers below are from two public price guides, both checked this year. They are for ordinary sites, mostly built on templates.

Mine are written by hand, to your design, for a fraction of that. The gap between my price and the going rate is your margin. You can charge your client less than an agency would, and still keep more than I do.

The clients who say no still pay you more.

Put the website on every quote from now on, even for clients who will never take it. A £2,500 website line does something useful to a £1,200 identity. It stops being the expensive option and becomes the sensible one.

You never have to say the words, my rates have gone up. You close more identity work, at higher prices, without changing a word of your pitch. That part costs nothing, and it starts the day you decide.

So what is in it for me?

Fair question. I get to build websites for designers I rate, on brands that already look good, instead of spending my evenings pitching strangers. I get paid on time, because you are the one the client already trusts. And I get to do the part I actually like, which is making the thing work and look right, while you do the part I am worst at, which is being lovely to clients.

I spent years doing identity work before I moved into building things, and I know what it is to hand a brand over and watch a stranger put it on a template. So yes, I win too. That is the point. You never have to wonder why I am being generous.

The first concept is free.

Send me one brand. A current client, an old one, or one you made up on the train. I will design a homepage concept for it and send it back, free. To be clear about what that is: one homepage, as a picture of what the site could be. Not a working website, and not something anyone can launch. Enough to judge me on your own work rather than on my say so.

If you do not love it, we never mention it again. If you do, the next one is real, and it pays. I am doing this with a handful of designers, not running a programme, so the first concepts go to whoever writes first. Email below, or a DM on Instagram, @clarkesdirective.

DM me on InstagramYou will hear from me within a day.

The things you would ask me over coffee.

Do I need to understand websites?

No. You need to know what the client wants it to do, and you already ask that.

Will my client know you exist?

Only if you want them to. Every email, call and invoice comes from you. I am the person in the background, and I like it there.

What if they want to change their own words later?

Tell me at the start and I will build it so they can. Nobody should need a developer for a new opening time.

What exactly is the free concept?

One homepage, designed for a brand you choose, sent back as a picture of what the site could be. It is not a working website and nobody can launch it. It exists so you can see the standard before you sell it.

How long does it take?

Demo concepts within 24 to 48 hours of the payment landing. A landing page inside a week once the design is signed off. A full site in two to three weeks, and sometimes one. You get a date before you promise one.

What if something breaks?

Anything I built wrong, I fix for free, for as long as the site is up. New things the client asks for later are quoted, and you mark those up too.

I am nervous about putting my prices up.

Then do not. Leave your identity price exactly where it is and add the website as a second line. Nobody can turn down a price you have not raised. If they say no to the website, you have lost nothing. If they say yes, your invoice just doubled without one awkward conversation. And while we are here: a higher price is not a risk, it is a filter. It attracts the clients who take the work seriously, it holds you to a higher standard, and it makes your smaller package look sensible next to it. That last one is the quiet trick every good studio uses. This is a business, and businesses price like this.

What am I signing?

Nothing. There is no contract until there is a paying client, and nothing that ties you to the next one.
